Gift rapt

Eight paintings from the private collection of one of Britain's most distinguished art historians have been gifted to Scotland's national collections.

In total, 57 paintings belonging to the late Sir Denis Mahon have been given to museums and galleries across the UK, with the National Galleries of Scotland receiving eight Italian Baroque paintings.

The works, which have been on loan to the NGS since 1999, are now a permanent part of the collections after the transfer was completed by The Art Fund charity.
