A young girl was hit by a car as she walked to school yesterday morning.

The incident happened at around 9am in Greenock when the six-year-old was on the A78 Inverkip Road near the junction at Old Inverkip Road at Barrs Cottage.

She was trying to cross the road at a pedestrian crossing when she was hit by a car travelling at slow speed towards Greenock.

The girl was taken to hospital for treatment to a minor head injury and was later released.

Strathclyde Police are appealing for witnesses.

They are also looking for the driver of the vehicle, a silver Vauxhall Corsa, which did not stop.

They said the driver may not be aware they hit anyone. The vehicle is described as a new shape, silver Vauxhall Corsa.
