Fine arts students at the Glasgow School of Art are to protest against the lack of 24 hour access to studios.

New hours for access to studios were put in place by the art school (GSA) following the disastrous fire at the Mackintosh Building last May.

The fire that swept through the Mackintosh Building destroyed the library but no one was hurt in the blaze which took place during the day.

School management say that the safety of staff and students is "paramount".

Prior to the fire, MFA students could access studios at all times in a "local arrangement" but this was revised after the fire.

However on Monday up to 46 students will protest against what they are calling "failed discussions and institutional neglect."

The demonstration will take place outside the Mackintosh and Reid Buildings of the school at 10am.

Currently students have access to studios until 10pm in the week and until 6pm at the weekend.

A statement from the MFA students says: "After many years of 24-hour access to MFA studios, we were informed 2 weeks before the beginning of the 2014-15 school year that the School's new opening hours would be 8am-10pm on weekdays and 8am-6pm on weekends.

"This news shocked and disappointed us all."

It adds: "The school cannot trade on the 'Glasgow Miracle' and Turner Prize-winning alumni while mistreating the students who study here.

"In the wake of the Mackintosh fire, steps must of course be taken to ensure the safety of the students in the school, and its legacy of excellence.

"What this decision and action by GSA management shows, however, is a dangerous disregard for the cultures which have created this legacy of excellence."

A spokesperson for the GSA said: "The Glasgow School of Art reviewed the opening hours of its buildings as one of a number of reviews undertaken following the Mackintosh Building fire in May 2014.

"The final revised opening hours were concluded following a period of consultation with both staff and students which resulted in a slight (5 hour) reduction in studio opening times and extended opening hours for the GSA Library and Central Workshops.

"These changes are designed to ensure the safety of staff and students and equality of studio access for all students."
