Funding worth £500,000 towards the new £5.34 million home for the National Theatre of Scotland is being considered by Glasgow City Council.

The council's executive committee is being asked to approve the funding towards the new facility in the city's Speirs Wharf area, allowing the acclaimed national company to commit to a home in the city for the next 20 years.

The committee, which meets next Thursday, is being asked to back the NTS's proposal to develop a disused industrial unit and turn it into a ground-breaking creative and production centre.

The intention is to create a facility where the writers, performers, designers, directors and technicians of the next 20 years can learn, develop and grow.

Bailie Liz Cameron, executive member for jobs and the economy, said: "This centre will be one of a very few of its type in the world and will further underline Glasgow's credentials as a cultural destination."

NTS buildings in the city include an administrative base in Civic Street, technical spaces at Speirs Locks and storage facilities on Maryhill Road. The leases for a number of the properties are coming up for renewal.
