A movie shot in Glasgow starring the Scottish actress Karen Gillan, best known for her role as Amy Pond in Doctor Who, will close this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF).

Not Another Happy Ending, described as an "indie romantic comedy", is the first major film role for Gillan, from Inverness. The movie's world premiere will take place on the closing night of the 67th festival this year.

The movie – directed by John McKay and filmed in various locations in Glasgow last year – also stars Stanley Weber, Kate Dickie, Gary Lewis and Amy Manson.

The film will receive the red-carpet treatment at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre on June 30. It has been produced by Claire Mundell of Glasgow's Synchronicity Films and written by David Solomons.

Chris Fujiwara, artistic director of the EIFF, said: "Speaking as somebody who, before coming to Scotland, knew Scotland partly through its portrayal in films, I'm really excited to find in Not Another Happy Ending, a fresh, interesting, and almost idyllic take on the cultural vibrancy of Scottish city life.

"The film also shows how well the time-honoured genre of romantic comedy can work in the contemporary Scottish context. The film will add just the right note of celebration with which to close our festival this year."

In the movie, a struggling publisher, Tomas Duval, discovers his only successful author, Jane Lockhart, is suffering with writer's block.

Mr Fujiwara added: "He has to unblock her or he's finished – with her newfound success, she's become too damn happy and she can't write when she's happy. The only trouble is, the worse he makes her feel, the more he realises he is in love with her."

Ms Mundell said: "Living and working in Scotland, we wanted to create something representative of the bustling creativity and wonderful, witty sense of humour we see around us."

The film has had funding from Creative Scotland as well as from Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Glasgow Film Office and Southwest Scotland Screen.
