A Glasgow pensioner has bet £30,000 on a Conservative majority government following next week's General Election.

He placed the bet at Ladbrokes Hope Street branch in the city centre with odds at 7/1.

Bookies bosses say the odds have since been cut to 6/1.

He is understood to have asked staff about the odds and then taken a "wad" of £50 notes from his jacket pocket to place the bet.

The pensioner, who is a retired accountant, is believed to have paid the entire wager in cash.

One cashier said: "He looked like he knew what he was doing.

"He seemed very calm considering the money at stake."

It is the biggest election majority bet to date, according to Ladbrokes.
