Fans, politicians and others took to social media sites to congratulate Celtic after Neil Lennon's team secured the club's 44th league title.

The East End of Glasgow witnessed joyous scenes as fans celebrated their side's comprehensive 4-1 defeat of Inverness Caledonian Thistle to clinch their second successive Premier League title.

The parties continued for hours and Celtic-supporting pubs were expected to do exceptional business.

The result at Celtic Park meant all of Scotland's senior football leagues have been won with several weeks of the season remaining.

Only Dumfries-based Queen of the South prevented a Glasgow clean sweep of the league titles, by winning the Second Division.

Partick Thistle took the First Division title while Rangers, who were relegated to the bottom tier after their financial collapse last year, won the Third Division.

The only trophy to be decided is the Scottish Cup, which will be won by Celtic or Hibernian.

Lennon said: "Winning the league is a very special moment, I want the players to enjoy it. It's a privilege to manage this club and to win this championship again.

"I'm so proud for the players and the fans – they're the people who make this club what it is."

First Minister Alex Salmond tweeted: "Congratulations @OfficialNeil and to everyone at @celticfc on retaining the Scottish Premier League championship title."

Shay Given, the Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, tweeted: "Congrats to everyone @celticfc crowned SPL champions again."

Meanwhile, Motherwell FC sent a congratulatory tweet, saying: "Congratulations to @celticfc on winning the Clydesdale Bank #SPL title this afternoon.

Paul Maskey MP tweeted: "Well done Celtic. Champions again." Lennon himself tweeted to his 189,265 followers: "Fantastic feeling, thank you for all your support. Players and fans were magnificent today."

Many ordinary Celtic fans took to the micro-blogging site to express their delight. Said one: "Took my daughter to her first Celtic match today. Missed Lenny's arrival on field to beat the crowds. Still worth it to see the champions."

Wrote another: "Thanks to Neil Lennon and the Bhoys, cheered my brother up, poorly in hospital at the mo. Much more to come!"

From Pennsylvania, USA, one Celtic fan wrote: "Another year Another title. Seven years since I found you Celtic and this American's life has not been the same. Champions of Scotland."
