A 99-YEAR-OLD widow who died after setting her hair on fire with a cigarette in a Stirling care home has been named as Margaret Samson.

An investigation is under way into the incident at council-run Wellgreen House last Wednesday.

The pensioner, known as Meg, was left badly burned on the head and neck after her hair accidentally caught fire as she was lighting a cigarette. She died from her injuries.

Home staff had extinguished the blaze by the time the fire brigade arrived.

Inquiries into the circumstances are being carried out by Central Scotland Police, Stirling Council and the Health and Safety Executive.

A spokesman for Stirling Council said it appeared to have been a tragic accident.
