Travellers have voted

a Western Isles beach among the best in Europe.

Luskentyre on Harris came eighth in a list of top European spots compiled from travellers' reviews by TripAdvisor.

Fourth-placed Woolacombe was the highest British beach in fourth, according to travellers' reviews by TripAdvisor.

Luskentyre lies at the end of a narrow and winding three mile road off the main A859 Tarbert to Leverburgh route.

One reviewer said it was 'unbeatable' and 233 of its 242 ratings on the website described it as 'excellent.'

The reviewer added that anyone going onto the beach should be 'prepared to be blown away' by the views of the North Harris mountains and the isle of Taransay.

Mike Cantlay, chairman of national tourism body VisitScotland said its inclusion was no surprise. He said: "Its white sands, coupled with spectacular scenery, make it hugely popular among visitors and locals alike. The Outer Hebrides is a beautiful part of the world."

Rhossili in Swansea was in 11th place, St Brelade's Bay beach in Jersey was 14th and Porthminster beach at St Ives in Cornwall was 18th.

Europe's top beach was Rabbit beach at Lampedusa in Italy, with Playa de Ses Illetes in Formentera in the Spanish Balearic Islands in second place and Elafonissi beach in Greece third.
