Deacon Blue frontman and BBC Scotland presenter Ricky Ross has been confirmed as the latest addition to the line up at the Solas Festival in Lanarkshire later this month.

The event, which has been described as a "wee Woodstock" will offer a mix of folk music, debate, theatre , comedy, film and visual art. Taking place near Biggar from June 22-24, it boasts a more cerebral line-up than the traditional summer gatherings of rock music, beer, noodles and stage-diving.

Ross, below, will play an acoustic set on the Saturday afternoon but will also speak about a recent trip to Brazil to see work carried out with landless people by festival partner Christian Aid.

The Solas Festival is a family friendly and charity-friendly inter faith-event run by Creative Scotland, Christian Aid, Scottish Refugee Week, the Church of Scotland's priority areas initiative and Greenbelt.

Its music line-up features Admiral Fallow, Imagineers and Roddy Woomble, while in aid of Scottish Refugee Week, Mary Ann Kennedy will reprise a live version of her BBC Radio Scotland Global Gathering.

The weekend will also feature refugee artists, including Carlos Arredondo, a Chilean refugee now living in Glasgow and poet Aonghas MacNeacail.

Political input and debate will be provided by speakers including Holyrood community safety minister Roseanna Cunningham and shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander.

Meanwhile young people from one of Scotland's leading social enterprises, Impact Arts, will run design workshops on how to upcycle old clothes and, Scottish dance company Indepen-dance, will perform an inclusive dance piece entitled Submerge followed by a dance workshop.

Frankie Campbell, festival co-ordinator says, "Festivals are such unique spaces where we can enjoy the best of Scotland's music, theatre, dance and creative arts. And Scottish voluntary organisations inspire us to remember that everyone has an artist hidden in them somewhere."
