Rail services across the Central Belt have been hit by delays and disruptions after the heatwave affected train tracks and signalling.

Problems with lines around Edinburgh Waverley, compounded by a signalling problem, have affected services in the east and across to Glasgow.

Network Rail said the highest recorded rail temperature today was 43C in the Kincardine area, and 38-40C generally on much of the network.

At Waverley, a track circuit failure east of the station caused loss of control to signals for platforms 1-4. A points failure west of the station hit line 5.

Both incidents were due to excessive heat, Network Rail confirmed.

There was also a points failure at Glasgow Central, afffecting the Barrhead line, although the cause was not specified.
