Three climbers have been rescued by helicopter from Britain's highest mountain.

Stornoway coastguard was called to help Lochaber Mountain Rescue on Ben Nevis in Fort William at 7.30am.

The coastguard crew picked up mountain rescuers in the town before heading to the summit.

The climbers were surrounded by cloud in an area of Ben Nevis known as Tower Ridge.

One of the climbers is understood to have been hypothermic.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: "The mountain rescue team located and walked to the casualties, and then took the casualties to a pick-up point where the helicopter could pick them up.

"They were airlifted off down to Fort William hospital."
