Herald journalists last night won several awards for quality journalism at the annual Scottish Press Awards.

The newspaper won accolades for its outstanding coverage of business and foreign news, the arts and its incisive cartoons at the ceremony hosted by broadcaster Tam Cowan at the Radisson Blu hotel in Glasgow.

Arts correspondent Phil Miller was named as the winning arts/entertainment journalist, and business editor Ian McConnell won the financial/business journalist category. Colin Donald, business editor of sister title, the Sunday Herald, was named runner-up.

Steven Camley won cartoonist of the year and Billy Briggs, who writes for The Herald Magazine, was named best magazine writer.

Sunday Herald foreign editor David Pratt, who also pens a weekly column on world events for The Herald, was named reporter of the year for the second year running.

Elsewhere, Ian Bell was runner-up in the columnist of the year category.

The judges also gave a lifetime achievement award to Campbell Gunn, former political editor of The Sunday Post.

A spokesman for the awards noted that the standard of entries had been particularly high.
