A redevelopment of a deprived area of Glasgow has been awarded more than £1.7 million from lottery funds.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has given the grant to an initiative in Parkhead Cross, in the east end of the city, run by Glasgow City Council.

The cash, for a second phase of works, will help fund the regeneration of the busy junction and will be used to redevelop properties in the area, including 15 shop fronts.

Other grants have been given by the HLF to projects involving the Viking settlement of Kirkwall in Orkney and the town of Cupar in Fife.

Colin McLean, head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland, said: "The regeneration of town centres is an obvious way in which we can make a contribution to improving the economy of an area and the standard of living for residents."

The Orkney Islands Council was also awarded a provisional grant of £1.7m to bring vacant historic properties back into use and improve shop fronts.

Meanwhile Fife Council will get a £578,000 grant for Cupar.
