The smart student, played by Emma Watson picked up a fifth of the votes in the survey by dvd rental firm LOVEFiLM and children's charity Filmclub.
Second was Charlie Bucket – the poor boy who wins a golden ticket for a visit to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory – who got 16% of the vote, followed by another Roald Dahl creation, Matilda Wormwood, played in the 1996 film by Mara Wilson and picked by 15% of the 1,000 children who voted.
