Former Hibernian footballer Leigh Griffiths has been charged in connection with an assault.

The Scotland international was arrested after an incident in Edinburgh city centre on Wednesday.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged assault that happened in Edinburgh city centre around 2pm on Wednesday June 19.

"A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal in relation to the incident."

Griffiths has returned to Wolverhampton Wanderers having spent the past two seasons on loan at the Edinburgh club.

He was recently named PFA Scotland young player of the year and Scottish Football Writers' Association player of the year.
