Olympic rower Katherine Grainger and Monty Python star Terry Jones will receive honorary degrees from Scotland's oldest university next month.

Actor, writer and director Jones and London 2012 gold medallist Grainger are among the names being honoured this summer by St Andrews University.

Former Republic of Ireland president Mary McAleese will also be recognised in one of eight ceremonies held at Younger Hall on June 25-28.

St Andrews said it is honouring "distinguished individuals" in academia, art, music and science.

Glasgow photographer Harry Benson, famous for his portraits of The Beatles and US presidents through the years, will receive an award along with Edinburgh Festival director Jonathan Mills, neurosurgeon Ian Johnston, Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology director Christopher Brown and Massachusetts Institute of Technology chemistry professor Richard Schrock.
