Hope for action to save Mackintosh buildings

THE society dedicated to supporting the legacy of Scotland's most famous architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, believes positive steps are being taken to address concerns over the state of some buildings.

Stuart Robertson, director of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, spoke out after an expert expressed concerns that the state of some of Mackintosh's buildings were "not at all rosy" and some are in need of repairs.

Mr Robertson said the society shared Roger Billcliffe's concerns over the state of some aspects of Mackintosh heritage but he feels a symposium held by interested parties in February has laid the foundation for further improvements to the buildings in the future."The symposium was very positive, we are trying to build bridges with everyone concerned in this," he said. "We saw it as a stepping stone for the future."Yesterday The Herald published concerns expressed by Mr Billcliffe, who noted his worries about buildings such as the Scotland Street School and the Martyrs School.
