The opening days of the Commonwealth Games look set to have weather as warm as the welcome in the host city.

Forecasters are predicting "stunning" conditions in Glasgow, not usually famed for its sunny skies.

Temperatures are predicted to reach as high as 26C as the city experiences a mini heatwave with plenty of warm summer sunshine.

Paul Knightley, forecast manager at MeteoGroup, said: "The weather in the opening couple of days will be pretty stunning and is really going to show off Glasgow pretty well to the rest of the world."

Sunshine and clear skies are forecast for the rest of today, with the mercury soaring to around 24-25C.

Mr Knightley said: "For the opening ceremony, conditions should be perfect with temperatures still fairly warm into the evening, around 18 or 19C.

"It should be a very nice and warm evening for everyone out and about taking part and watching."

The warm weather will continue for the first few days of events, with any mist and low cloud tomorrow morning clearing.

"There's a 90% chance that it will be dry and fine, and pretty warm with temperatures of 25 or 26C - another lovely day for Glasgow," Mr Knightley said.

Prospects for Friday look even better, with the risk of showers down to 2% and temperatures again in the mid-20s with plenty of sunshine.

Conditions are expected to remain warm but get more unsettled over the weekend, with the possibility of showers.

Going into the early part of next week, the weather looks more mixed as the current easterly wind changes to a westerly coming off the Atlantic.

"Next week looks like a more typical summer week, with nice days but also a bit of rain around from time to time as well, but I don't foresee any washout conditions," Mr Knightley said.
