A LEADING hotel has apologised after a disgruntled guest launched an internet campaign when she claimed a relative with Down's syndrome had been refused service.

Facebook user Claire Cumming used the website to post extensive criticism of her alleged treatment by staff at The Royal Highland Hotel in Inverness. Her views attracted the interest of 45,000 website users.

Ms Cumming, of Aberdeen, said staff gave them 'dirty looks' in the restaurant and they suffered a 20-minute delay in being served.

The customer also claimed a member of staff would not allow her uncle, Willie, who has the condition, his regular fare of food off a children's menu. Regional Manager Indranil Banerjee wrote on Facebook: "I offer my profuse apologies to Claire Cumming and Willie for the upset that was caused during their visit to our restaurant yesterday.

"I invite them to meet with me so that I can say sorry in person and seek to make amends.

"I would like to reassure all of our guests that we pride ourselves in providing equal opportunities to our diners, and our staffs are all fully trained in this protocol."
