The 1946 seizures in 2012 was the highest number in more than a decade, representing a 14% rise on the previous year and up 89% compared with 2002.
The current levels mean that, on average, five prisoners are caught with illegal substances every day in Scotland, with Addiewell jail in West Lothian recording the most breaches.
