House builder Cala Homes have asked for permission to move a war memorial and create the exclusive estate.
Their proposals include plans for 15 homes to be built on the site of the 1679 Battle of Bothwell Bridge in the South Lanarkshire village.
The move has drawn fierce protests from objectors who claim the works would be an 'insult' to soldiers who lost their lives over 300 years ago.
Tory MSP Margaret Mitchell said: "The proposal would adversely affect the character and amenity of the existing, established residential area of Bothwell."
Bothwell Historical Society has also objected to the new development.
A Cala Homes spokesman said: "We propose to open up the site to visitors and create a heritage park.
"This would be a fitting memorial to the Covenanters and allow future generations to learn about the history of the Battle of Bothwell Bridge."
