AN EVOCATIVE painting by Scottish impressionist William McTaggart is expected to fetch up to £80,000 when it is sold at auction later this month.

Winter Sunrise, which the artist painted in 1884, will go under the hammer at a Lyon & Turnbull's sale of British and European art on November 27.

The auction will take place at the Western Club, but from today visitors to The Lighthouse, Scotland's centre for design and architecture design, will be able to see some of the paintings at a special preview.

Charlotte Riordan, a paintings specialist at the auctioneers, said: "William McTaggart is known for his idiosyncratic and atmospheric paintings of the sea and storms, featuring scenes from both coasts of Scotland.

"Winter Sunrise is rare for its depiction of a snowy, wintery scene. His mastery in the representation of nature and weather effects is evident in the beautiful tones that give the painting the soft, warm light of a crisp winter's morning."

The sale will also include three paintings by Thomas Robertson and John Mitchell of the Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire Hunt, two of which are valued at £10,000-£15,000.

There will also be three paintings by the Dutch-born artist Johan Scherrewitz.
