Pupils from five high schools practised alongside the professional brass band players at St Thomas Aquinas Secondary in Glasgow today before performing tonight.

Monica Morrison is music teacher at St Thomas Aquinas and is also a musician in the 6 SCOTS Lowland Territorial Army Band. "When I was at high school I was in the privileged position to take part in a workshop with the Navy and it benefited me greatly. As a pupil it was an experience that stayed with me," she said. "So far (the pupils) have been able to develop their musicality, develop their confidence because they are playing alongside professional musicians which is hard at some of their standards." Bradley Starkey, 14, plays the tenor saxophone and hopes to enlist as a musician with the Army. The Springburn Academy pupil said: "It's been hard but its been good. "When you get wrong bits with the music or struggling they help you out. "It gives me more options to go into the band rather than the front line." The Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland is the only full-time military band in Scotland. It recently performed at the Paralympic Games and has been to Afghanistan twice in the last year, providing troop morale support over the festive season and again during Burns festivities in January. Warrant Officer Class One Bandmaster Justin Teggarty said: "The band is here today to promote Army music. Not a lot of people know the Army's got bands. In fact there are 22 and only one is in Scotland. "One of our jobs is recruiting and we've got to cover the whole of Scotland so we are here today." Donations raised at the concert will go towards the school fund.
