Increase in number of lifeboat call-outs

SCOTLAND'S lifeboats had a busier summer than last year, being called out on average five times a day.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) said the 46 lifeboat stations launched a total of 417 times in June, July and August, an increase of 4% compared with the corresponding period in 2011.

The busiest station was Troon with 25 call-outs or "shouts", an increase of three on 2011.

The busiest inshore station was Queensferry on the Firth of Forth, where the volunteers had 21 shouts, but that was a drop of four on the previous year.There were significant increases in call-outs at Largs, Mallaig, Campbeltown and Tobermory on Mull, which saw activity jump from two shouts in 2011 to 15 this year, making it the eighth-busiest station in Scotland. The charity's newest lifeboat station, at Leverburgh on the island of Harris, had seven shouts.Stations in the far north at Wick, Thurso, Orkney and Shetland were all quieter than in 2011.There was a mixed picture on the east coast.
