FILTH star James McAvoy was named best actor at the British Independent Film Award last night.

The 34-year-old Port Glasgow-born star won the accolade for his role in the film version of the scatological Irvine Welsh novel, beating rivals including Tom Hardy and Steve Coogan.

Some of the biggest names in UK cinema gathered at Old Billingsgate in central London for the celebration of independent film-making.

Accepting the award, McAvoy said: "It's like Scotland has won the World Cup!"
