FORTY firefighters battled overnight to extinguish a blaze that swept through an industrial estate unit.

Crews from Barrhead and Pollok fire stations were called to Shanks Industrial Park in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, at 2.30am yesterday.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service technical support team attended the blaze in the single-storey building because of suspected asbestos. The site houses recycling material, including cardboard.

More than 20 firefighters were still at the scene yesterday, checking for heat spots and ensuring the building is safe.

Group Commander Brian Winter said: "The service's technical support team have confirmed the construction of the building and introduced measures to ensure there is no risk to the firefighters and general public."

There were no reports of casualties and the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Meanwhile, a man and woman were rescued by firefighters from a three-storey building at Kildonan Court in Newmains, North Lanarkshire.

A blaze at ground-floor level was reported to the fire service at 1.40am and survival guidance was given over the telephone to a woman who was on an upper level of the building, the fire service said.

A spokesman said: "Six firefighters entered the property wearing breathing apparatus. One man was removed from the first floor. One woman from the third floor was led to safety and was suffering from slight smoke inhalation."
