FINAL nominations are being sought for the inaugural Inspiring City Awards, which aim to celebrate the people and organisations that make Glasgow great.

The awards have captured the imagination of private and public sector organisations alike and The Herald and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, which are joining forces to launch the event, have been inundated with entries.

However, there is still time to put names forward and reward those who have contributed to the economic and cultural success of Glasgow.

Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: "There is such a diverse range of talent within the city so these awards are an extremely fitting way to recognise at least some of it.

"As we gear up for one of the biggest years in our history, what better time to launch an awards which commend the hard work of many of its residents?"

Mr Patrick said there had been a surge in investment in the city, with new sports venues, work carried out on cultural hubs such as the Theatre Royal and the growth of the film festival.

He added: "More investment can be seen in the city's retail core, at Glasgow Airport and in our educational institutions, all of which make Glasgow an attractive destination for people from all over the world.

"All of this activity is making a notable difference and these awards will reward those who are involved."

Entries are invited in 10 categories including business, education, arts, culture and sport. All categories are open to individuals, businesses and third-sector organisations.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is supporting the education category.

Chairman Andrew Robertson said: "There is so much going on across Glasgow that the health board has been in partnership with to directly improve services and improve health.

"It is terrific The Herald, the major media voice in the city, is championing these Inspiring City Awards in partnership with the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce during such an exciting time of development and regeneration activity."

The awards are supported by new Glasgow brand People Make Glasgow.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council and chairman of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB), said there had never been a more exciting time to be in the city.

He added: "We're Scotland's principal powerhouse; the cultural, sporting, engineering and academic heart of the country, and we're now one of Europe's top financial centres.

"The Inspiring City Awards, supported by Glasgow's new city brand, People Make Glasgow, provide the perfect opportunity to reward those truly remarkable individuals, businesses and organisations that consistently go the extra mile to ensure Glasgow continues to flourish.

"The huge changes Glasgow has undergone in the past 50 years have been brought about by our people working together to make a difference at every level - from those inspiring action in their local community to those enhancing the city's reputation internationally.

"In much the same spirit as these awards, our new brand will provide a platform to recognise Glasgow's strengths and act to attract investment, growth and opportunity to our city in years to come."

The closing date for entries to the awards is August 13.
