A six-year-old boy was left behind on a platform when tram doors closed before his mother could get him on board.

An investigation has been launched into the incident at Edinburgh Trams Hermiston Gait stop on Monday around 1pm.

Simone Brown, 26, who also had her other son who eight weeks old with her, was boarding the tram first but said before she had time to turn round to collect her son Jayden the doors had closed.

She raised the problem with the driver who felt it was safer to continue to the next stop rather than halt the tram.

A spokesman for Edinburgh Trams said CCTV operators kept a watch on the boy.

The Edinburgh trams spokesman said: "As soon as our staff became aware the tram control team were informed and they kept a watch over the child using CCTV.

"Further to this, a female passenger at the tram stop was contacted by our control team via the intercom system and she agreed to stay with the boy until he was reunited with his mum."

Ms Brown was reported as saying: "They told me it wasn't enough of an emergency to stop the tram.

"They also didn't tell me he was with anyone so I was panicking the whole time thinking he might get on the next tram."

The spokesman for Edinburgh Trams said: "We understand that this was an upsetting experience and we're looking into the circumstances.
