WHILE Scotland held its breath to discover the outcome of the independence referendum, hundreds of hardy technology fans camped overnight outside Apple's store in Glasgow to get their hands on the latest iPhone.

About 300 customers queued outside the Buchanan Street store in the hope of securing their own iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus handset, as they went on sale for the first time at 8am yesterday morning.

In some parts of the world, including New York, customers have been camping outside stores for the eagerly awaited models since the beginning of the month.

Prices for the phones start at £539, though users who want more than a 16GB capacity will have to spend £619 for the 64GB model or £699 for the 128GB model.

Technology fans said the new model had improved screen quality and battery life as well as a slimmer design.

One Glasgow customer said: "I just wanted to be one of the first to get the new iPhone6 so I could show off to my pals. It's very exciting and well worth the wait. I feel on top of the world."

There was a 10-second countdown before the doors opened and cheering fans were escorted in by staff.
