A SCOTS woman has been hailed the "mother of whisky" – in Japan.
Rita Taketsuru is virtually unknown in Scotland, but in Japan, more than 50 years after her death, she is a legendary figure.
Born Jessie Roberta Cowan, the doctor's daughter left her home in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, in 1920, and moved to Japan.
