AN up-and-coming Scottish fashion designer is a finalist in a competition in which the winner holds their own catwalk show at Berlin Fashion Week.

Katy Clark, 23, from Netherlee, East Renfrewshire, impressed judges including Stella McCartney to become one of five finalists in the Designer for Tomorrow event in the German capital. The former Cardonald College student, who graduated last year from Northumbria University, will get professional advice and mentoring from the leading designer and the Designer for Tomorrow advisory board if she wins. She could also be invited to join McCartney in Paris for her spring/summer 2014 fashion show.

There were 350 entries from newly graduated designers from across Europe. Ms Clark admitted she was overwhelmed to reach the final, saying: "I don't really believe it. I thought someone was pranking me."

McCartney, a designer she admires, had hand-picked her as there are similarities in their design aesthetic. "My collection is tailored and is inspired by menswear, with focus on cut and fabric. Her (McCartney's) collection last season was tailored with asymmetrical cuts and navy and black pinstripes – which I also use."

Ms Clark's personal style differs from the clothes she creates. "I design for someone I wish I could be. I wear more colour and bodycon items, but in my designs I use draping and darker colours."

The finalist was granted an audience with McCartney, who questioned her about where she saw her designs being stocked and her career goals.
