TWO kayakers had to be rescued by Coatguard from Loch Ness after their expedition ran into trouble.

High waves saw one of the paddlers from Edinburgh capsize three miles north of Drumnadrochit after they had set off from Fort Augustus.

As they tried to reach shelter at a beach enroute to Dochgarroch near Inverness, one of the pair capsized

RNLI Loch Ness was alerted and a Coastguard rescue helicopter team based at Inverness airport was sent to the scene along with an Atlantic 75 Class lifeboat

Two passing yachts had also responded and were able to pinpoint the location for the RNLI volunteers.

On arrival, the lifeboat crew found one male in the water holding on to his upturned kayak but unable to either right himself or swim to the shore.

He was pulled from the water and medically assessed just as the Coastguard helicopter arrived overhead. He was suffering from the effects of cold water immersion.

The lifeboat crew then returned to the scene of the rescue to recover the second paddler

RNLI Loch Ness Helm and Sea Safety Officer, Howie Whyte praised kayakers for being "so well prepared and organised."
