A LAWYER has claimed that kebabs can prevent domestic abuse by sending hungry drunks to sleep.

The claim was made at a Dundee City Council licensing committee meeting as solicitor Janet Hood argued for a Dundee takeaway to be given a late licence allowing it to serve food until 2.30am.

The lawyer, representing Teyfik Cetinkaya of Khans in Broughty Ferry, said high-fat, high-carbohydrate food like doner kebabs sends people who have been drinking to sleep. That in turn stops them lashing out at their partners when they get home - or starting fires by starting to cook food then falling asleep.

Miss Hood said: "Medical evidence strongly suggests that eating after drinking helps induce sleep, which could help lower alcohol-related domestic violence."

Responding to her comments, SNP councillor Jimmy Black said: "I had no idea a kebab could solve so many problems."

But her argument won the day - and the shop will now stay open until 2am on weekdays and 2.30am on weekends.
