A 21-year-old driver who caused a crash that killed his friend has avoided jail after a judge took the unusual step of admonishing him.

Luke Crawford's car came off the icy road as he overtook another vehicle and crashed into trees. Aaron Dickie, 18, of Cupar, Fife, suffered fatal injuries following the accident on the A92 near Kirkcaldy in 2010.

Crawford, of Ladybank, Fife, now confined to a wheelchair after an electric shock last year, returned to the High Court in Glasgow having earlier been convicted of causing death by careless driving.

Judge Norman Ritchie, QC, said: "I don't think a custodial sentence is in any way justified."
