Kim Beagan, 21, overcame 15 finalists to win the title at a ceremony held at the House of Commons.
She joined Action for Children Scotland's construction skills course Youthbuild two years ago.
Having left school at a very young age, and spent two years on benefits, she was interested in the industry but with no qualifications or experience did not know how to get started. The course helped her gain the accreditations for a career in construction, and an apprenticeship with tthe decorating firm Novus Solutions where she still works.
Kim said: "My Gran was worried working in construction would be too tough but it is something I was always interested in.
"I didn't expect to win the award at all."
The winners were presented with a trophy, framed certificate, a £1,000 voucher for construction tools and a cheque for £500.
