The number of arrests following yesterday's League Cup semi-final has risen to 37, police said.

Officers initially announced that 19 people were arrested but that number has almost doubled overnight, according to a spokeswoman for the force.

She said: "A total of 23 of those arrested are expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday, 12 of those for alleged sectarian breach of the peace.

"A further 11 people have been reported to the procurator fiscal and three were handed fixed penalty notices."

Tensions were high in what was the first game between the clubs since Rangers' liquidation in 2012. Celtic won 2-0 to reach the League Cup final.

Police officers were deployed at the stadium, in Glasgow city centre and at major transport hubs before, during and after the match.

At one point after the game, scores of police and riot vans were deployed to accompany a group of Rangers fans walking back from the south side to the city centre.

Both clubs were also visited by Police Scotland to remind players and management of their responsibilities in a bid to minimise any possibility of trouble.

Chief Superintendent Andy Bates said after the game: "As usual the vast majority of the 50,000 fans were here to enjoy the game and support their respective team; they deserve credit for their excellent behaviour. However, again, it is the minority of fans who spoiled the occasion by for example setting off flares and singing sectarian songs.

"We dealt with any incidents swiftly and with minimum disruption. As at 5pm hours, 19 men have been arrested for a number of offences - mostly alleged minor public order offences but include 10 arrests for alleged sectarian breaches of the peace."

The semi-final match was a sell-out, with an international TV audience in 54 countries. The Scottish Professional Football League said today's match had a potential audience of 129 million outside of the UK, with broadcasters in the US, Australia, Europe and Asia screening it.
