SCOTTISH actor and film-maker Peter Mullan will star in the first television adaptation of an Iain Banks' novel since the acclaimed author died from cancer last year.

Mullan is among the cast announced for a two-part dramatisation of Stonemouth, published in 2012.

The BBC described the drama as a rite-of-passage tale delving into love, loyalty and vengeance, and focusing on the character of Stewart Gilmour.

Gilmour will be played by Christian Cooke, who also starred in ITV shows Demons and Trinity. Other actors signed up for the project include Gary Lewis, who had parts in Billy Elliot and Gangs Of New York.

Christopher Aird, BBC Scotland's executive producer on Stonemouth, said: "I am so pleased some of the best acting talent in the country will be appearing in Stonemouth. We are very excited to be bringing Iain Banks' novel to the screen in 2015."
