Lecturer union attacks controversial contracts

ACADEMICS have attacked the increasing use of controversial contracts that do not specify hours at Scottish universities.

The UCU Scotland union, which represents lecturers, said institutions such as Glasgow and Edinburgh universities were increasingly using the controversial zero-hours contracts to recruit staff. Known as "hours to be notified", the contracts inform staff of how many hours they may be required to work, but there is no obligation to provide that employment.
