Jim Murphy, Alex Salmond and tennis ace Andy Murray have been named in a list of the 500 most influential people in Britain.

Other prominent Scots in Debrett's include Adam Crozier, the former boss of Royal Mail who now heads up ITV.

The annual Debrett's 500 ranking covers 24 categories across society including politics, advertising, architecture, food, sport, education and journalism.

Murphy, who was elected Scottish Labour leader last month, is listed 14th in the politics section, two places above former First Minister Alex Salmond. However, there is no room for his successor Nicola Sturgeon.

Murray ranks 24th in the sport category, featuring alongside Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and golfer Rory McIroy.

Other Scots on the list include Harry Potter author JK Rowling and actor Peter Capaldi, while ITV chief executive Adam Crozier, philanthropist Angus MacDonald, founder of the Moidart Trust and the West Coast Communities Growth Trust, and Fortnum & Mason chief executive Ewan Venters also feature.

Rangers shareholder Mike Ashley is listed as the most influential person in retail, while activist Malala Yousafzai - who was shot in the head by militants after blogging about life under Taliban rule in north-west Pakistan - also made the list.

The 17-year-old, the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize, is also the youngest in the Debrett's rankings, while wildlife broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, aged 88, is the oldest on the list.

Other influencers include the Prince of Wales, comedian Russell Brand and vlogger-turned-author Zoella, while Tony Blair and Richard Branson also feature.

Clare Balding, who presented the BBC's coverage of last year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, musicians Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith, and boy band One Direction are also included.

A total of 147 females feature.

Joanne Milner, chief executive at Debrett's, said: "We are delighted to announce this year's Debrett's 500. It's a fascinating mix of people, and not entirely who you might expect.

"Every individual, though, demonstrates outstanding qualities of influence, achievement and inspiration. I think now is the perfect time to consider how we can inspire the next generation of influencers, so that we can ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, has an equal opportunity to succeed."
