A listed municipal building is to become a boutique hotel as developers seek to capitalise on its popularity with marrying couples.

East Dunbartonshire Council has agreed to sell Grade-B listed Boclair House, one of its former office buildings in Bearsden, to a group that hopes to appeal to wedding parties.

The Tudor Gothic house dates back to 1890 and has a castellated tower and series of archways said to resemble Italian cloisters.

WPH Developments Limited beat off rivals with a plan for a bespoke hotel that will create an estimated 34 full-time and 20 part-time jobs, while also creating some affordable housing.

It was a private residence and home for the elderly before being opened as a municipal building by Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon in 1962.

Councillor Alan Moir, who sits on the council's development and infrastructure committee, said: "Councillors looked carefully at all bids, taking into consideration a number of issues including job creation and provision of affordable housing, as well as looking at offer prices."
