Livestock disease found in Orkney

SCOTLAND'S first case of an animal disease that causes miscarriages and birth defects was identified in Orkney, it has emerged.

A ram transported from Shropshire tested positive for Schmallenberg virus (SBV) in the first known case north of the Border.

The National Farmers' Union (NFU) Scotland confirmed on Wednesday the disease had been detected in Scotland, but the precise location of the animal was not confirmed until yesterday.
