A LORRY driver has been convicted of a 'barbaric' attack on a young man which has left him severely brain damaged.

Dylan McCausland, 24, was in a coma for more than a year after the assault by a gang led by Martin Friars, 35, in Baillieston, Glasgow, in December 2012.

Friars, of Swinton, pursued the victim knocking him to the ground and then stamping and kicking on his head and body even after he lost consciousness, the High Court in Glasgow heard.

After the guilty verdict, Judge Michael O'Grady QC told Friars, who will be sentenced next month: "You have been convicted of a crime which has - rightly - been described in this court as barbaric."

He added it was "chilling" that as the victim lay dreadfully injured, "you and the others walked away laughing and joking" and called it "recreational violence."
