EuroMillions lottery winner Colin Weir is planning to help out his local football team by paying for upgrades to the club's grounds.

The 64-year-old, who pocketed a record £161 million with his wife Chris last July, has agreed to pay for improvement work at Largs Thistle's Barrfields Park.

This could include a new astroturf pitch and floodlights for the Ayrshire side, which could run to a six-figure sum.

Club president Douglas Bennie confirmed Mr Weir's involvement with the junior side, but claimed that no firm agreement had been reached yet.

He said: "He's going to perhaps pay for some ground improvements, but we're still discussing exactly what that will entail.

"He's always been a supporter of Partick Thistle and Largs Thistle and has agreed to pay for some infrastructure work, but we don't know exactly how much we're going to do.

"People assume that because he's got millions he's going to throw money at us, but we're a small club – it's not exactly Ibrox – and we are trying to avoid becoming like Ibrox.

"We haven't thrashed out a deal yet, but we would like an Astroturf pitch and maybe some new floodlights."

However, Mr Bennie said that the retired TV cameraman wanted to spend sensibly.

"This is not a case of a sugar daddy buying umpteen players, but it will benefit Largs in the long term," the chairman added.

Mr Weir has already donated £1m to the SNP and an undisclosed sum to the Waverley paddle steamer to help keep the vessel afloat.
