Newcaster Sally Magnusson threw up her hands in frustration today as BBC Scotland's lunchtime news bulletin came close to chaos.

Sally Magnusson literally threw up her hands in frustration as the broadcaster's lunchtime news bulletin came close to chaos.

BBC Scotland was forced to apologise to viewers last night after admitting "a number of technical problems" during the news programme, which incuded a failed link to a report from the Open at Muirfeild, a pre-recorded report which did not want to start, and, it appeared, a failure of the autocue.

Ms Magnusson appeared more than relieved to reach the end of the show, throwing her hands up in despair or relief at the end.

A BBC Scotland spokesman said: "We experienced a number of problems which began with a failed link during a report from the golf at Muirfield. We would like to apologise to viewers for the disruption to the bulletin."

One BBC insider said: "Sally did a great job, considering, but it was pretty chaotic...the cutbacks in evidence."

The source said that technical failures were exacerbated by having "too few staff" in production, due to the recent and ongoing cuts in staffing at the broadcaster.

The troubled bulletin caused a stir on Twitter yesterday as viewers reacted to the show.

James Christie said: "Sally Magnusson on BBC Scotland just showed why it's useful to have an experienced anchor when the news disintegrates into technical chaos" while Lisa Davidson noted: "I hope they put an unedited version of today's Reporting Scotland online. That was some series of unfortunate events for Sally Magnusson". Another viewer, Thomas Cunningham, mused: "It was car crash television."
