SOME of Glasgow's major roads were closed over the weekend as a giant crane removed the mast from the top of a Glasgow indoor shopping mall.

Renfrew Street was closed between Cambridge Street and Hope Street just after midnight on Saturday morning to allow the delicate operation at the Savoy tower, above the shopping mecca behind Sauchiehall Street.

The closure led to traffic disruption amongst drivers, as motorists and more than 10 bus services had to alter their routes around the city centre.

The road was expected to reopen at 6am on Monday morning in time for rush-hour commuters.

Parts of Ingram Street and Hanover Street were also blocked off at 6am on Saturday morning.

Ingram Street was shut off between Queen Street and South Fredrick Street, whilst Hanover Street was closed between George Square and Ingram Street until 10pm on Sunday evening.

Some of Argyle Street will be blocked off again this week for works as part of the Scottish Power Iberdola HQ.

The closures, which began during rush-hour on Monday March 9, will see the busy street shut off between Kelvingrove Street and Derby Street, whilst Corunna Street will be closed between Argyle Street and St Vincent Crescent.

The street will be open as normal from 5:00pm on Sunday March 22.
