Man, 21, arrested after trying to snatch Queen's Commonwealth Games Baton in Kilmarnock

A man has been arrested after an apparent attempt to grab the Queen's Commonwealth Games Baton as it was being carried through the streets of a Scottish town.

The incident happened as the relay made its way through Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire at around 6.30pm today.

The event was not stopped and the baton-bearer continued waving to the crowds as he made his way along the town's Portland Road.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal, Police Scotland said.

The baton was in Kilmarnock after a day of celebrations on the eighth day of the Scottish leg of the relay.

It has travelled through 70 nations and territories in its 248-day journey around the Commonwealth, with the final destination being the opening ceremony of the Games in Glasgow next month.
