Man, 28, in court for assault on pensioner who later died

A man has appeared in court charged with assault after a man was found dead in a house.

Police found the body of James Greer, 68, at a property in Barnett Crescent, Saltcoats, North Ayrshire, after they were called to the address at around 11.55pm on Sunday night.

Michael Gallagher, 28, from Irvine, was charged with assault to injury when he appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court today.

He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody, the Crown Office said.

Police said Mr Greer left the Elms Bar in Raise Street at around 8.05pm on Sunday night and walked in the company of two friends - a man and a woman - to a house in Barnett Crescent.

They appealed for information from anyone who saw him.
