A man will appear in court next week in connection with the death of a teenage Army cadet who drowned during a training accident in 2007.

Kaylee McIntosh, 14, died after she was pinned under a boat on Loch Carnan, South Uist in the Outer Hebrides in August 2007.

A fatal accident inquiry was held into the schoolgirl's death in 2008. Sheriff Alasdair MacFadyen, who led the inquiry, listed steps which could have prevented the accident.

Major George McCallum, 51, is due to appear at Inverness Sheriff Court next week.

Kaylee's parents Derek and Lesley McIntosh welcomed the development.

In a statement they said: "We've waited so long for this and fought so hard. This announcement is progress and we hope to see more of it to get full justice for our daughter."

Glen Millar, the family's lawyer, said: "It's a positive step and one that will go at least some way to seeing justice served but more needs to be done. As the criminal case is now active it would be inappropriate to comment further on the circumstances surrounding Kaylee's death."
