A MAN has died and several others have been hurt in a four-vehicle crash on the A9.

The road was shut after two lorries, a car transporter and a car collided near Aviemore at 3pm today.

It happened about one mile south of the Granish junction, north of the popular ski resort.

The road was expected to remain closed for a number of hours while emergency services deal with the incident.

Police Scotland said it would remain closed as collision investigation work is carried out.

Diversions were put in place through Aviemore.

Police confirmed that a 23-year-old man had been taken to Raigmore Hospital and had died. Several others who sustained minor injuries were also taken to hospital.

An air ambulance was initially scrambled and then stood down after struggling in low-lying cloud.

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: "We sent four ambulances and a helicopter, which was struggling to make it to the scene due to low cloud. We alerted the coastguard, but both air crews were both then stood down after medics decided they were not needed."

A woman has also died after a single-vehicle collision.
The incident happened on the A92 Stonehaven to Inverbervie Road near to the Bervie Bridge at around 4.25pm  and involved a white Vauxhall Corsa.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle being driven on the road is asked to contact Police Scotland.
It is understood the woman is not local to the area.
